HACHIMAN is a Premium Madake Dobari Shinai, which features a large 'Dou' section, placing the balance close to the hands, and narrows to a fine light, tip. This makes HACHIMAN easy to manoeuvre, and perfect for multiple, sharp strikes. HACHIMAN is one of the best balanced Shinai available.
Unlike other Shinai, HACHIMAN is an oval HAKKAKU 'Koban' style Shinai, which means that the handle has been carved into an elliptical-octagon shape - which is feels very comfortable in the hands, and gives a unique feeling when held. This style was developed a few years ago, and is the choice of many high level Sensei.
A perfect grip to me. The only issue for me is the fitting of the tsuba & taubadome. Due to the octagonal shape it’s very hard to get a perfect fit. Not impossible though and absolutely understandable.
it fits perfectly in the hand compared to the classic shinai, it feels lighter due to the center of gravity closer to the hand, and thanks to the shape of the handle, it is also easier to control and much easier to realize the angle of attack
My first and only shinai
I ve been using this shinai for over three years now. As katana practitioner, I find this shinai fit my hand very well as its handle shape is similar to katana handle. Very done kendostar.
Masterful Craftmanship
The grip feels comfortable in my hands and it's an all round beautiful piece of craftmanship. I hope to take good care of it so that it will last me a long time. The shinai was delivered swiftly and in great condition. Looking forward to getting to use it soon.
Very Well Balanced Shinai
This Shinai is well made and very well balanced. It does not feel like a Dobari, and maintaining a centreline is easier than Dobari I have used, and lighter than the Koto Shinai (which I really like by the way). My choice for this particular type of grip and size was to help reduce my tendency to over-grip, and improve hasuji. I will buy a Koto style when it becomes available.

The Big Hand Solution
We keep a library of shinai at the club, because having a well suited shinai means beginners are more likely to stick with it. The octagonal grip was our latest addition and it has been invaluable. People with bigger hands tend to have terrible hand 'posture' when they start, whereas with this shinai I only have to correct people once and most seem to prefer that oval, which feels more like a real sword. I'd recommend this to anyone with large mitts who is having trouble holding their shinai correctly. Only problem is it's hard to get a tsuba and tsuba dome that fit! We ended up sanding one up to size.
Good for large hands
I shared to Andy my struggle at wrapping my fingers around the grip as a beginner so he suggested me this Shinai. I definitely don't regret having followed his advice!
Great Shinai
It's a great shinai, in mi case, don't see a big dobari section, seems betwen koto - dobari (i saw bigger dobari in other type of shinai), the handle is fantastic but if you has a small hands this shinai its not for you. The rest, has a great quality and price because includes the shippment.
Octagonal large
Really like this shinai good quality as all kendo star products.
Fits my grip as I have chunky paws gave me a good feeling of control in centre.
As did the large circle grip but this seems to keep my grip more true.
Buy one try it be impressed.

Great Shinai
