The KENSEI All-Purpose Shinai is the core everyday Shinai in the KendoStar lineup. With a standard profile, a standard round grip, and neutral, all-round balance, it handles the way a Shinai is expected to and adapts easily to every part of regular training.

Its name, 剣星, joins the characters for sword and star. KENSEI is the foundation of the KENSEI Standard range, in which each model is identified by the colour of its 剣星 mark.

Neutral, All-Round Balance

KENSEI follows the standard all-round pattern rather than a specialised shape, giving neutral handling that does not favour one style of Kendo over another. It is equally at home in Kirikaeshi, Kihon, Waza practice, and Ji-Geiko.

For a beginner, this means learning grip, timing, and correct striking on a Shinai that behaves predictably. For an experienced Kendoka, it means a dependable everyday Shinai that feels familiar from the first swing.

All our Shinai are made according to the All Japan Kendo Federation and International Kendo Federation standards. The weights below are the minimum and the lengths the maximum set out in the All Japan Kendo Federation guidelines for each size.

Bamboo contains natural oil that dries out over time. To help your Shinai keep its proper weight, please oil it regularly.

If you are unsure which Shinai to choose, KENSEI is the natural place to start: the standard of the range, with nothing specialised to get used to.

Prompt delivery. Just started using the first of three kendo star shinais after my very first one ($30 one) cracked, so I ordered KS this time. Am Still a beginner but the Sinai seems legit.
