ITTŌ RYŌDAN Octagonal Grip Koto Shinai
A premium Koto Jissengata Shinai with a large octagonal Koban grip, combining traditional tip weight with a secure grip and a clear sense of Hasuji.
The ITTŌ RYŌDAN Octagonal Grip Koto Shinai is a Koto Jissengata Shinai: it keeps the straighter profile and tip weight of a Koto, with a thinner Jissengata tip, and adds a large octagonal Koban grip. The thicker grip strengthens the hold and makes the tip easier to control, while the octagonal shape helps keep the correct Hasuji.
Its name, 一刀両断, means cutting cleanly in two with a single stroke, an expression for decisive action. Like every model in the Premium range, ITTŌ RYŌDAN is made to your specification: choose your fittings and Tsuru colour, or order the bamboo only.
Secure Grip, Clear Hasuji
The large octagonal Koban grip fits the hand closely and is easy to hold. Its shape tells the hands how the Shinai is angled, helping keep the correct Hasuji and making it well suited to Kaeshi-Waza and Suriage-Waza.
With the tip weight of a Koto, it also suits Tobikomi-Waza and Ai-Waza from longer distance, and Oji-Waza and combinations as the situation allows.

All our Shinai are made according to the All Japan Kendo Federation and International Kendo Federation standards. The weight below is the minimum and the length the maximum set out in the All Japan Kendo Federation guidelines for this size.
Bamboo contains natural oil that dries out over time. To help your Shinai keep its proper weight, please oil it regularly.

Who Is ITTŌ RYŌDAN For?
ITTŌ RYŌDAN is for Kendoka who prefer a traditional Koto Shinai and want strong directional feedback from a large octagonal grip.
It suits technical Kendoka who value Kaeshi-Waza and Suriage-Waza as much as committed attacks from distance.
Choose Your Fittings
Fitted options are supplied fully assembled, with Tsuka, Sakigawa, Nakayui, and a Tsuru in your chosen colour. The options differ only in the Tsuka: the other parts are the same. Or order the bamboo only and fit your own.
