About Housen
Housen, based in Hyogo, is one of Japan’s most established and respected producers of custom-made Shinai bags and other Kendo luggage. Known for its commitment to excellence, Housen crafts each piece to order, using only the finest materials to ensure unparalleled quality and durability. Every product reflects the rich tradition of Japanese craftsmanship, embodying a meticulous attention to detail and a dedication to functionality and style. Naturally, all Housen products are proudly made in Japan, upholding the heritage and standards for which the brand is renowned.
Commitment to Hanpu Fabric
Housen primarily uses No. 8 Hanpu fabric in its products. Avoiding inexpensive, mass-produced overseas fabrics, Housen focuses exclusively on 100% cotton Hanpu woven domestically in Japan. Hanpu is a thick, plain-woven fabric made from cotton or hemp, named after its historical use in ship sails during the Edo period. Renowned for its excellent strength, durability, and breathability, Hanpu is an ideal material for shinai bags. This fabric is sourced through direct relationships with reliable domestic producers, ensuring quality from the natural cotton to the weaving techniques.
Commitment to Dyeing
All Hanpu fabrics used by Housen begin in their natural, unbleached state. From this starting point, Housen creates entirely original designs and colors through a custom dyeing process. Achieving the delicate and profound hues of Japan’s traditional colors requires the expertise and skills of seasoned artisans. Housen collaborates with dyeing specialists in Kyoto, who carry on a legacy of traditional techniques, to develop unique colors that balance heritage with modern sensibilities. These carefully dyed colors reflect a blend of tradition and innovation. Feedback from customers at competition venues also informs product improvement and development, ensuring that evolving needs are met.
Product Development at Housen
To meet diverse customer needs, Housen offers a wide variety of fabrics and patterns. The company continually strives to enhance the quality of each product by refining designs through a process of trial and improvement. Housen remains committed to creating innovative and high-quality items.
No Product is Perfectly Flawless — Scratches Add Character
Leather and Hanpu products crafted by Housen may feature minor scuffs, weaving imperfections, or uneven dyeing. These materials, carefully chosen for their specific purposes, include high-quality cowhide and thick fabrics selected for their durability and texture. All materials are rigorously vetted by professionals to ensure they meet Housen’s standards. Minor scratches do not compromise strength and are considered part of the material's character, allowing customers to use these products with confidence.
About Product Images
Product photos are taken to closely represent the actual colors. However, due to differences in monitor characteristics and settings, the color and texture of products may appear different from the actual items. Customers are advised to consider this when viewing product images.
Slight color variations may also occur depending on the production timing of materials. When purchasing items as a set (e.g., Kendo equipment bags and shinai bags in the same color), Housen recommends purchasing them together to ensure color consistency.
The darker and lighter areas sometimes visible in Hanpu products are not uneven dyeing but are instead part of a finishing process called “Tataki.”
Commitment to Japanese-Made Products
Housen places great importance on achieving a balance of design, texture, performance, and durability in its products. This is made possible by using high-quality, domestically sourced materials and carefully finishing each item by hand. Housen believes that this level of craftsmanship is achievable only through the use of Japanese-made materials and techniques. The company continues to pursue craftsmanship that delivers true satisfaction to its customers.
