TENKAFUBU is our deluxe Madake Jodan Shinai, which has been especially developed for use by exponents of Jodan no Kamae. Practicing Kendo from Jodan results in a somewhat different hand position on the Shinai, and TENKAFUBU is made to allow for that. Featuring a longer Tsuka (handle) section.

Great shinai, sadly the tsukagawa was hard stuck and had to be cut open, but Kendostar helped!

I bought these set after allmost a year in jodan tehnicque, above all for longer tsukagawa feature. Bought it via kendo club Im member, and as allways, it all went smooth and nice.
However, the shinai did not show so nice and good. The first one broke within few weeks of medium practiceing.. ok, it happens, sometimes soneer sometimes later, its the part of the deal. I was being lucky and two shinai from the set were very similar, so changing parts it was possible. The second shinai broke after few weeks of medium practice. Now it got odd to me, but as being said, I was able to assamble a mixed one.. and then, after a a medium tournament, I foumd tsukagawa ripped on the tsuba/tsuba-dome area. It just started to get ripped by the tsura tension. Ok, everything hapens, for the firs time, maybe tsuba (stock plastic one) is/was deformed, even I could not find any issues with it. Again, I had a second tsukagawa, so I replace it. In the mean time, this mix shinai broke too, so i boight a cheaper, practice one, and mount the jodan tsukagawa on it. It felt very similar so no big pain for me.. and gies what, after a short period, the second taukagawa ripped, same way as the first one. This really made me sad, since this practice shinai looks more stubborn and durable then the "special" jodan one, but Im running out of tsukas, and of corse, you cant buy only jodan tsukagawa...
So, my prayer goes to the third shinai from the set, used only on one tournament for now, and keeping ot that way, as for practice some frankeshinais are going to do..
Too bad, I really hoped I finaly found my shinai type..

Great Jodan-kamae Shinai
I decided to buy this as I felt that my shortened tsuka shinais I use for regular practice was making my shoulders shrug up, thus making my kamae too rigid; the longer tsuka really helped me relax as I take my Jodan-kamae.
The balance throughout the shinai reminds me a lot of the Koto/Chokuto-style shinai which I feel helped me a lot get a better pop when hitting katate-waza. The weight feeling like it's being distributed throughout the entire length of the shinai adds a little weight to it so you can develop the strength.
Would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a longer tsuka shinai or a shinai that'll help their Jodan-kamae.

Koto shinai with good balance
The tsukagawa of these shinai are long to better suit jodan kamae.
For jodan your tsukagawa should be about 3,5 of your fists. This also helps you have more seperation between your left and right kote making them distant targets.
These are also well balanced koto shinai, suitable for a well timed single blow. They are not good for repetative strikes.
They are not so durable, you can break one with a strong gyaku do.

The good, the bad and the ugly
First of, fast payment, fast delivery, everthing worked really well!
The good:
The longer tsuka and tsukagawa are really nice, they help to relax in kamae. The weight and weight distribution on all 3 was nice. The outer look was great.
The bad:
There wasnt any, so we skip that for the uglys sake
The ugly:
The first starve broke in the first 2 hours of practice (beyond sandig it off or anything) well, that can happen, so no hard feelings for it
But
After 4months, all three of them are beyond repair, and since the nodes are on totally different heights its not even possible to create a good ol' frankenshinai
In those 4 months i couldnt even practice nearly the usual amount so you can even pull one of actually.
I really like the idea, i really enjoyed the feeling, but the durability on my pack was really below average

Useful and quality product
The longer stuka definitely promotes a better kamae. Its a subtle difference but noticeable. The main thing that will keep me purchasing these is the balance. The Do section being further forward and less bulky makes this shinai want to go forward and stay straight doing it. Well worth the money if you're taking Jodan seriously.

Great shinai!
As a Jodan player I’ve experimented with a lot of different types of shinai, and was mostly indifferent to the various grips and widths… until I tried these!!! The longer tsuka, the different balance, I fell in love with these immediately and haven’t used anything else since. Now I buy 3 every time they go on sale. Thanks KendoStar!

pleased customer
Good quality and well ballanced shinai for katate strikes. The slightly longer tsuka makes a diffrence for jodan players. I'm happy with the purchase and fast delivery. I'm gonna buy this set again for sure:)
