I agree that several years’ practice with chudan is necessary before trusting yourself with safe jodan or nito. You can’t do proper kikentai-no-ichi and acquire a proper sense of ma-ai from jodan. The exception I would see, is if your local sensei, week-in, week-out, is competent at either of these stances. In Europe (I’m based in Southern France) they are pretty thin on the ground.
