The KENSEI Red Dobari Shinai is the competition-oriented model of the KENSEI Standard range. It combines a Dobari body, fuller through the lower section, with a thinner Jissengata tip, which brings the centre of gravity closer to the hands and lets the Shinai swing with a light, quick feeling.

Within the KENSEI Standard range, each model is identified by the colour of its 剣星 mark, and this model carries the mark in red, 赤.

KENSEI Red Dobari Shinai with a broader Dobari profile, balance closer to the hands, and 26mm standard grip

Weight Towards the Hands

A Dobari Shinai has a broader body, fuller through its lower section, and a Jissengata Shinai a thinner tip. KENSEI Red combines both, so the centre of gravity sits closer to the hands, the tip feels light, and the Shinai can be moved quickly and precisely.

The handling suits attacks from close distance, fast combinations, Oji-Waza, Hiki-Waza, and Tobikomi-Waza, where a quick tip matters most.

Single Dobari Jissengata Shinai

This product includes 1 x KENSEI Red Dobari Shinai, supplied fully assembled with a leather Tsuka and ready to use.

Key Features

  • Dobari Jissengata profile
A body fuller through the lower section and a thinner tip, both bringing the balance closer to the hands for match-ready handling.
  • Light-feeling tip
The centre of gravity sits closer to the hands, so the Shinai swings with a light, quick feeling.
  • Built for fast technique
    Suited to close-distance attacks, combinations, Oji-Waza, Hiki-Waza, and Tobikomi-Waza.
  • Standard round grip
A familiar round Tsuka, so the difference in handling comes from the profile rather than the grip. Approximately 26mm on size 39, measured on the bamboo without the Tsuka.
  • Ready to use
Supplied fully assembled with a leather Tsuka, so it can go straight into Keiko.
  • Made to federation standards
Made according to the All Japan Kendo Federation and International Kendo Federation standards.
  • Sizes for adults and juniors
Available in men's and ladies' size 39, and in junior sizes from 36 to 38.
  • Part of the KENSEI Standard range
Each KENSEI model is identified by the colour of its 剣星 mark; this one carries it in red.

Who Is KENSEI Red For?

KENSEI Red is for Kendoka who want a fast, light-feeling Shinai for Shiai and Ji-Geiko, and who build their Kendo on speed, timing, and quick technique. It suits experienced Kendoka and competing juniors alike.

It is the successor to our JUNKI Shinai, and the best pick if you appreciate JUNKI. If you train with the standard KENSEI and want a Shinai for matches, KENSEI Red keeps the same familiar grip with a quicker-feeling balance.

Please note: Shinai are made from natural bamboo, so slight variations in colour, grain, weight, and finish are normal. The product received may vary slightly from the product images. Please inspect your Shinai regularly and maintain it correctly before and after practice.

Nice shinai I like the feel of this shinai when striking it somehow feels more flexible than the madake bamboo ones, the leather fittings on this one are the best ones I had so far. Cant say the balance point is further towards the hand than all purpose. Still really like using this shinai.

QUALITY Dobari Jissengata Shinai ‘JUNKI’ - Set of *10!!*

Irregular product The first time I bought the Junki shinai, I found it was outstanding for a dobari shinai. It had such a light feeling I could not even belive it would reach regulated weight. However the second time I bought this model, I didn't felt the same. I bought 10 junki and 10 basic shinai for the dojo, the junki felt just a bit more dobari than the gokuen one. Still a good shinai though

QUALITY Dobari Jissengata Shinai ‘JUNKI’ - SINGLE SHINAI

Dobari? TL;de: good shinai, subjectively short tsukagawa, oddly not-really-dobari. The shinai in themselves are good, well balanced shinai. Here are a few observations: The tsukagawa came too short for my taste. I'm 175cm tall, with proportionately long forearms, and had to put a longer tsukagawa than what was offered to get any good use from these shinai. Also, I noticed the center of gravity of these shinai was EXACTLY at the same spot as basic shinai (from another brand, not the KS all purpose), which made me wonder: are these really dobari? What's the point of dobari if you need to sacrifice even more durability than that to get the center of gravity closer to your hands? Will try other dobari-er shinai in the future, or stick with the KS all purpose, but won't repurchase this model.
