SHIKON is a premium short grip Jissengata Shinai which is not only perfect for elite competitors, but is a perfect choice for those looking for a Shinai which allows for fast, consecutive attacks. SHIKON has been made with the short-grip design in mind, so rather than simply attaching a shorter Tsukagawa (handle leather), the center of balance of the Shinai is set further towards the grip also, so that the balance is optimum for use with a shorter grip.
In addition to the KINJIRUSHI Series Shinai being made from premium cut bamboo, this same quality can be found in the leather fittings too - which are included as standard.
Grip length is approximately 29cm.

Initially I ordered a short grip along with my first 2 other shinai orders here at Kendostar just to try it out. I absolutely loved that grip that it made me order a set of 3 of it this time. It's perfect for me who generally has short limbs, it helped with avoiding my right hand to overextend when doing a cut (a problem I used to have with standard grip). Perfect for jigeiko or competition use
Surely, the specs of these shinai are not for everyone, but if you are looking for short-grip dobari/jissengata style shinai, you probably want to give this one a try. I personally really love the (perceived) weight distribution/balance. The 'do' is positioned slightly more towards the tsuba than is the case for (some) other short-grip dobari/jissengata style shinai that I have come across (the difference is not not much though, but it really does the trick). This makes the tsuka feel heavier than it actually is, which provides a solid base for (left-hand) tenouchi. The tip of the shinai feels light (but not flimsy or weak) and travels quickly (rivaled only by the KS delivery speed... ;‑)!)
Fantastic. Just what I needed. It has helped greatly to improve my cuts. Downside when taking one apart to sand and oil it before use. The bamboo under the leather handle was stuck together and when separated it split and splintered badly.
Good Shinai but Strange sensation
The important point that should be noted is that the grip is larger because it’s like the distal part of a normal grip is cut and so you keep the largest part near the tsuba.
I have been having wrist trouble, and the standard skaya length was very uncomfortable. I just used this shinai at practice last night and it was wonderful.... great responsiveness and it has greatly reduced the soreness and stiffness in my wrist. I am expecting complete resolution with this change. WORTH EVERY PENNY. Thanks for the super fast delivery, and of course The Kendo Show!!!!
Good for tournaments
I got two of these for my girlfriend, and she's been more than pleased with them, complimenting the short grip and the manoeuvrability. They are her new favourite.
Outstanding
First of all, the extra quality of this range is really noticeable from the first moment it is unpacked.
The shorter grip helps keep the left arm straight on a cut without sliding the right hand down from the tsuba as much, and feels extremely nimble in closer quarters.
I bought three, and now two are out on loan to others in my dojo, who have fallen for the shorter grip and are keen to trial them.
I haven't persinally tried every variant of shinai available, but this is the top so far, and will be very hard to beat.
The Shinai i've been looking for.
Look, I'm cool using regular shinai. I'm a Small guy of 5"5' But most importantly i have a Range of motion issue in my right arm from an injury. I tried shortening the handles of my regular shinai and even got "short handled" shinai from other brands, but the have all been unbalanced and unwieldy. Until now, These shinai were sent by the kendo gods. I've put my other short handle shinai up against standard ones and they have been the same length of just regular shinai that have has a short tsukaito on it. but not the shikon. not only is it actually shorted in the handle but it is balanced to feel light yet present at the tip. or at least mine are. they are all unique in their feel too.
