May I say to your last point, there is a kind of tough love even though the Japanese don’t call it that, but in my experience how the best Sensei teach is by correcting what you are doing wrong either physically or very verbally. When you do something correctly they will acknowledge it with a slight bow. But don’t expect praise. You will sometimes know how well you are doing when they dismiss you from keiko after 1 minute.
