The KENSEI Green Koto Shinai is a Koto Jissengata Shinai. Its straighter, traditional Koto profile has a thinner bulge through the body, which keeps the centre of balance towards the tip for the solid, authoritative strike Kendoka value in a Koto Shinai. The thinner Jissengata tip brings the balance a little back towards the hands, so it stays quick and adaptable.

Within the KENSEI Standard range, each model is identified by the colour of its 剣星 mark, and this model carries the mark in green, 緑.

KENSEI Green Koto Jissengata Shinai with a straight profile, balanced towards the tip, and 25mm standard grip

Tip Weight, Quick Handling

A Koto Shinai is straighter, with a thinner bulge through its body, so its balance sits towards the tip and every strike carries through. KENSEI Green is finished with a thinner Jissengata tip, which brings the balance a little closer to the hands for quicker, more adaptable handling.

It suits Kendoka who favour committed Tobikomi-Waza and Ai-Waza from longer distance, and who also look for Ippon with Oji-Waza and combinations.

Single Koto Jissengata Shinai

This product includes 1 x KENSEI Green Koto Shinai, supplied fully assembled with a leather Tsuka and ready to use.

Key Features

  • Koto Jissengata profile
A straighter, traditional profile with a thinner bulge, finished with a thinner Jissengata tip.
  • Tip weight, quick handling
The Koto profile keeps weight at the tip for a solid strike, while the thinner tip keeps it quick in the hands.
  • Built for attacks from distance
Suited to Tobikomi-Waza and Ai-Waza from longer distance, as well as Oji-Waza and combinations.
  • Match-grade finish
Firm, thick-walled staves finished slim, for a crisp, decisive feel on impact.
  • Standard round grip
A familiar round Tsuka, so the traditional feel comes from the profile rather than the grip. Approximately 25mm on size 39, measured on the bamboo without the Tsuka.
  • Ready to use
Supplied fully assembled with a leather Tsuka, so it can go straight into Keiko.
  • Made to federation standards
Made according to the All Japan Kendo Federation and International Kendo Federation standards.
  • Part of the KENSEI Standard range
Each KENSEI model is identified by the colour of its 剣星 mark; this one carries it in green.

A Traditional Feel

For Kendoka who prefer the feel of a classic Koto Shinai in their hands.

Solid, Decisive Strikes

With the balance towards the tip, each strike carries weight and authority.

Who Is KENSEI Green For?

KENSEI Green is for Kendoka who prefer a traditional-feeling Shinai, with a straighter profile and its balance towards the tip, and a thinner tip that keeps it quick in the hands.

It suits Kendoka whose Kendo is built on committed attacks from longer distance. It is the successor to our RYUKATSU Shinai, and the best pick if you appreciate RYUKATSU.

Please note: Shinai are made from natural bamboo, so slight variations in colour, grain, weight, and finish are normal. The product received may vary slightly from the product images. Please inspect your Shinai regularly and maintain it correctly before and after practice.

Customer photo review of *NEW* - Deluxe Koto-Jissengata Shinai 'RYUKATSU’ - Set of *3*

I have tried a lot of the KendoStar line of shinais: HACHIMAN, NICHIRIN TOU, TOUKON, KIYOMASA and the RYUKATSU. All of them are exceptional and I think the shinai that will suite you best depends on your style and the stage at which you are in your kendo journey. That said, I have felt a greater affinity towards koto-style shinais, and have nothing but praise towards the NICHIRIN TOU. However, as I am refining my kamae (my posture, grip, weight distribution, etc.), and a few sessions of keiko with the RYUKATSU, I feel that the smaller grip of the RYUKATSU works better for me. This lets me grip the shinai more completely allowing it to settle snugly in the palm of my hands. The weight is heavier towards the "blade" for the RYUKATSU compared to the NICHIRIN TOU, but it does not diminish the handling and balance of the shinai as a whole. Looking forward growing in kendo alongside this shinai! P.S. The images shows in order from left to right: KIYOMASA (2024), RYUKATSU (2025), NICHIRIN TOU (2021)
