Kirikaeshi Part 3: Distance, Breathing and Zanshin | Kendo Lesson

Kirikaeshi is one of the most important drills in Kendo, but it only becomes truly valuable when the details are done with purpose.

In Part 3 of this three part series, we look at distance, breathing, and maintaining Zanshin throughout Kirikaeshi. These points are essential for making the drill more than just a sequence of strikes.

Good Kirikaeshi should develop correct Maai, strong breathing, continuous spirit, sharp footwork, and the ability to remain connected to your partner from beginning to end.

In this episode of Kendo Lesson, we look at how to keep the correct distance during the drill, how breathing affects rhythm and intensity, and why Zanshin must be maintained even after the final strike.

Part 1 covered the initial set up and first strike. Part 2 covered correct striking and receiving. Part 3 brings the whole drill together by focusing on the elements that give Kirikaeshi its real value.
