This is a Keichiku Shinai - Keichiku is the most common material made for Shinai production, and it is a species of Bamboo that is native to Taiwan. It is comparatively flexible and gives a slightly elastic feel to your strikes.
Made from select cuts of Bamboo, and includes leather parts.
The smoking process infuses the staves with carbon, which is said to provide additional flexibility, helping to prevent breakage. Often referred to as 'Bio', smoked Shinai present a deep brown colour, and are currently popular with several of Japan's top Kendo practitioners.
